Boat Club President, Chris Launchbury, explains the many benefits of rowing while studying at Cambridge University.
Rowing is arguably the most ‘Cambridge’ of university sports, and Lucy Cavendish College is lucky to have a thriving and successful Boat Club.
Although perhaps infamous for early-morning training and cold weather, rowing is undoubtedly one of the best sports at Lucy for learning something new, keeping fit, and making new friends. So, you’ve already got one reason to try!
But rather than hear me talk any more about it, here is what our rowers have to say about it (all of whom started rowing at Lucy):
“It adds a lot of discipline into my day! By waking up early and exercising, I feel refreshed and have a clear mind to start my studies.”
- Aurelia (Second Year Undergraduate, Psychological and Behavioural Sciences):
“It’s amazing to be part of such a passionate and driven team. Some of my best times in Michaelmas have been at the boat club.”
- Mimi (First Year Undergraduate, Veterinary Medicine)
“From both rowing and captaincy, I have been able to develop skills in time management and communication. I have also found it hugely helps with relieving stress, so I can be more productive as a result.”
- Archie, our current Men’s Captain (Second Year Undergraduate, Natural Sciences)
“Rowing in Cambridge is not just a sport, it’s a whole lifestyle! You get to meet great people with the same positive mindset, willing to sacrifice their early mornings for a shared goal. Rowing taught me a lot about teamwork and the importance of disciplined, hard work. Winning Blades as part of the first Lucy men’s team was certainly the most exciting thing of my entire year. I would definitely recommend rowing to anyone with a passion for sports!”
- Carlo (MPhil graduate, Industrial Systems, Manufacture and Management)
