Hayley Hilson, Lucy’s Outreach Officer, on providing opportunity and empowering students
Hayley describes how she aims to tackle educational inequality and increase diversity and representation
We work with schools, colleges, students and third party organisations to inspire and support young people
Lucy Cavendish College is a place for world-class academic study and houses a friendly, diverse and inclusive community. The College’s focus is on groups that are currently underrepresented in the University with three specific goals: to admit a majority of its students from backgrounds that are either disadvantaged or underrepresented at Cambridge, to have a student population by 2025 that is broadly representative of UK society as a whole, and to increase the number of international students at the College, particularly those from low income backgrounds or who are from countries that currently send very few students to Cambridge.
The admissions and outreach team members have a wealth of knowledge and experience and offer help and advice at every stage of a student’s application, wherever they are in the world, if they want to apply for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
The College also runs several outreach programmes every year. In 2021, for example, we held a Maths and Physics programme for Engineering aimed at students applying to top Universities, a Physics Problem solving masterclass with the Isaac Physics team focused on the key A-level Physics topics of Mechanics and Electricity, and the Cottrell Essay Prize in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, open to all students in year 12 (or equivalent) attending schools both in the UK and overseas, which saw an incredible number of entries for the second year in a row. We also host regular webinar series for prospective applicants and for teachers looking to develop their knowledge of HE admissions and to support more young people to apply.
Our flagship initiative this year is our new Summer Preparation Programme, which has been designed specifically to respond to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on maintained sector education in the UK. This six-week course will help students to make up for educational disruption over the past eighteen months by offering a programme of subject-specific seminars, study skills workshops and university information sessions. It is intended to help participants to develop key skills and knowledge and to bridge the gap between GCSE and A-level study.
As part of the Cambridge University Virtual Open Days 2021, Lucy Cavendish College will be hosting a number of live sessions from Thursday 8 July to Friday 15 July, where prospective students, parents guardians and supporters will be able to chat to our admissions team and our Directors of Studies to find out more about College and how it can support students every step of the way.
