Lucy’s History of Giving is making it possible for our students to succeed.

In the final article of our LucyGives History of Giving series, we are celebrating gifts to the College that are still today enabling students to seek out opportunities to enhance their academic experience, improve their well-being and develop the skills needed to make a positive difference in their future careers.

Dame Veronica

Dame Veronica Sutherland, Sixth Lucy Cavendish President, and former Vice-President Dr Lindsey Traub’s donations of Lady Charlotte, Speedwell and Lucky Lucy helped make up a formidable Lucy ‘fleet’. The purchase of the Lucy Cavendish College Boat Club (LCCBC) fourth boat, Lucky Lyda, was made possible by gift from a generous anonymous donor. Lucky Lyda was launched in 2019 by Lucy’s first resident student, Peggy Allison.

The Precor EFX 346i Total Body Cross Trainer in the Lucy Cavendish College Gym was generously donated in support of the LCCBC, for use by all College members, by Mr Steve Atkins-Linnel and Mr John Fuller on behalf of HSBC, and Mr Ty Watson on behalf of Precor Products Ltd.

A donation from the Chadwyck-Healey Charitable Trust supported the establishment of a new collection of introductory books for incoming students. An initial group of 30 students were identified by the Admissions Office as potential beneficiaries of the service and these students were contacted by the Library with details of how to access their subject’s preparatory reading list and an offer to purchase and post items from each list to the student’s home address. This offer was then extended to all incoming students previously at state schools once places were confirmed in August and some 59 books were posted out to students in advance of their arrival in Cambridge. This is in addition to the 377 books purchased thanks to the generosity of LucyGives donors in 2020.

These are just several ways in which Lucy’s supporters have made a tremendous difference to the lives of our students to date. Philanthropy ensures Lucy Cavendish can continue to be the vanguard of change at Cambridge and the College is deeply grateful to its benefactors through the years.
