PhD student, Dongkeun’s research looks into how students and teachers can interact effectively in videoconferencing.
Meet Dongkeun, a third-year PhD student at Lucy, whose research delves into the transformative world of video conferencing education. Gone are the days of Zoom simply facilitating communication; this project explores how these platforms are reshaping the very landscape of learning.
But Dongkeun's approach is far from typical. His research isn't just about observing teachers and students; it's about empowering them. Two science teachers, one from the UK and another from Mexico, are not mere participants; they are co-investigators, actively shaping the research and co-designing solutions for their specific contexts.
This collaborative spirit extends to the data itself. Dongkeun and his team have meticulously analysed 10 video conferencing classes, held between October 2022 and June 2023, using cutting-edge technology. Their focus? The teachers' "multimodal interactions" – how they use chat, emojis, reactions, and annotations to engage students in richer digital dialogues.
The ultimate goal? To create truly engaging, enjoyable, and collaborative online learning experiences. Whether you're a student yearning for a more vibrant virtual classroom or an educator seeking to make the most of online tools, Dongkeun's research holds the potential to revolutionise learning, anywhere and anytime.
