We know that moving to a new place can be a bit overwhelming, but rest assured, Cambridge is a welcoming and friendly city. To help you settle in quicker and make you feel at home, we've teamed up with our students to compile a list of the top 10 most-used Cambridge slang terms. Consider this your crash course in Cambridge jargon!
Matriculation
Matriculation is your official enrollment into the university. It’s a formal ceremony that marks your entry as a member of the university community. You'll get to dress up, sign the matriculation book, and feel like you're truly part of something special!
Plodge
Short for Porters' Lodge, the plodge is the first building you’ll encounter when you enter your college. This is where you’ll pick up your keys, receive large parcels, and find your pigeonhole. The Porters are always there to help you with anything you might need, so don’t be afraid to ask!
Pigeonhole
Your pigeonhole is your personal mailbox within the plodge. It’s where all your post will be delivered, so make sure to check it regularly.
Stash
Stash refers to any branded clothing or accessories that represent your college, society, or sports team. You'll see students proudly wearing their stash around Cambridge, whether it’s a hoodie, a scarf, or even a water bottle. It’s a great way to show your college pride!
Gyp
A gyp is a small kitchen area shared by students in your accommodation. It's equipped with basic facilities like a kettle, toaster, and microwave, where you can prepare simple meals or snacks. The term is unique to Cambridge, so don’t be surprised when you hear it for the first time!
Bumps
Bumps is a series of rowing races that take place on the River Cam. Unlike regular races, boats start in a single file and aim to bump the boat in front without being bumped by the boat behind. It’s a thrilling event that’s unique to Cambridge and a highlight of the sporting calendar.
Formals
Formals are dinners held in your college’s dining hall where you wear a gown over your formal attire. It’s a bit like stepping into the world of Harry Potter, where you have to wear your gown! It’s one of those quintessential Cambridge experiences that you’ll remember for a very long time!
Buttery
The buttery is your college canteen, where you can grab meals throughout the day. It’s a great place to catch up with friends over breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The buttery is often a hub of college life, so you’ll quickly become familiar with it.
Bop
A Bop, short for ‘Big Organised Party,’ is a large college party often with a fun theme. It’s a chance to relax, dance, and socialize with other students. Each college hosts its own Bops, and they’re always a highlight of the term.
Cuppers
Cuppers are inter-collegiate sports competitions where teams from different colleges compete against each other. Whether you're participating or cheering from the sidelines, Cuppers are a great way to get involved in college life and show your college spirit!
Bonus! CamCard
Your CamCard is a handy electronic card that serves multiple purposes. You’ll use it to enter college buildings, pay for meals, and even access the library. It’s an essential part of Cambridge life, so keep it with you at all times!
