#LivefromLucy with Dr Gladius Kulothungan 'Can businesses help us achieve widespread development?'
Income inequality has been rising steadily across the globe for decades. The richest 1% of the population own 45 percent of the entire wealth of the world, while 57 percent of the population hold less than 2 percent. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
Who, or which entities in society will be able to deliver on them?
It is common knowledge that business and enterprise have the power to transform neighbourhoods and improve income levels of individuals. The question is: can businesses and enterprises help us achieve widespread development, tackling the intractable problems of inequality?
Spotlighting the growing phenomenon of ‘social enterprises’ – businesses with a ‘social mission’ – across the globe, the talk showcases grassroots initiatives that are transforming lives and communities worldwide. More needs to be done to promote these social enterprises and the academic community have a distinct role to play in this regard – contributing concretely to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.
