Tax Efficient Giving from Canada
The University of Cambridge is recognised as an educational institution eligible for charitable status under Canadian tax law, making donations to Lucy Cavendish from Canadian residents tax-deductible. Payment can be made online, via cheque or bank transfer. Please email development@lucy.cam.ac.uk when making your gift and we will request a receipt from the University on your behalf.
Gift Aid in the UK
The Gift Aid scheme enables Lucy Cavendish to claim an extra 25% on the value of your gift at no further cost to you. In order for us to claim Gift Aid, you must pay at least as much Income and/or Capital Gains Tax in the tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities you have donated to will reclaim on your gifts for the tax year. Other taxes, such as Council tax and VAT, do not qualify. It is possible to declare your eligibility for Gift Aid at the point of making your gift.
If you pay higher rate tax, you can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax (40 and/or 45%) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the total ‘gross’ value of your donation to Lucy Cavendish. For example, if you donate £100, the total value of your donation to the charity is £125 – so you can claim back:
- £25 – if you pay tax at 40% (£125 × 20%)
- £31.25 – if you pay tax at 45% (£125 × 25%)
You can make this claim on your Self Assessment tax return. For more information see the gov.uk website. You can cancel a Gift Aid declaration at any time by contacting the Development Office.
