Professor Benedikt Löwe was elected in recognition of outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good.
In December 2023, College Director of Studies for Mathematics, Professor Benedikt Löwe, was elected as a Fellow of the International Science Council (FISC). This prestigious recognition acknowledges his exceptional contributions to promoting science as a global force for good and the dialogue between the humanities and the sciences.
The Council is the global voice for science and represents all national scientific communities of its 146 member countries (from Albania to Zimbabwe) as well as all disciplines from the natural and social sciences. Its vision is to advance science as a global public good.
The Fellowship is the highest honour conferred on individuals. Fellows are recognized for their outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good and are eminent scientists, engineers and thought-leaders from the science-policy sphere who have made remarkable contributions to furthering understanding of and engagement with science.
Professor Löwe is a leading figure in bridging mathematics, computer science, philosophy, and the social sciences, is a Bye-Fellow of our College, and teaches in mathematics, philosophy, and history and philosophy of science at our University; in addition, he is the chair holder of the CIPSH Chair "Diversity of Mathematical Research Cultures and Practices" at the Universität Hamburg.
Highly active in scientific communities, he is a member of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS), the Academia Europaea (AE), and the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg and a Vice President of the arts and humanities counterpart of the ISC, the International Humanities Council (CIPSH).
