Dr Liam Saddington’s research reimagines education into a tool for positive change.

Dr Liam Saddington, Fellow and Director of Studies for Geography at Lucy Cavendish College, recently published a paper titled Simulating Alternative Internationals: Geopolitics Role-Playing in UK Schools, written in collaboration with Professor Fiona McConnell from the University of Oxford. This innovative work explores the use of role-play simulations to help students grasp the complexities of geopolitics, international relations, and human rights.

Liam's research builds on the success of traditional Model United Nations (MUN) programmes. However, his focus extends to communities often sidelined in global discussions: those belonging to the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO). UNPO members are states, territories, or peoples who lack a seat at the UN but still face critical geopolitical challenges and fight for their rights.

Through 'Model UNPO' exercises, students step into the shoes of representatives from these unrepresented entities. The immersive experience requires in-depth research into a chosen polity and its unique claims. Students then come together in structured debates, mirroring the UN's processes, but centred on a more diverse range of geopolitical voices.

The project has observed Model UNPO in action within UK schools. His fascinating findings suggest that these simulations foster a deep understanding of global affairs within a classroom setting. They also cultivate critical thinking about established geopolitical structures, promote empathy and solidarity for underrepresented communities and nurture student confidence in voicing alternative visions for a more inclusive world.

Liam’s work underscores the immense value of interactive learning and underscores the transformative potential of seeing the world through the eyes of others. It highlights the capability of our young people to become engaged and compassionate global citizens.
