Hollie graduated last month, coming top of her English Tripos year group.

Hollie Wells, a recent graduate, won the Mrs Claude Beddington Prize this year. Hollie graduated from Lucy Cavendish last month, coming top of her English Tripos year group for 2019. The prize was awarded to honour this.

The Mrs Claude Beddington English Literature Prize is a university award; each year, it goes to the candidate who shows the greatest distinction in the examination for Part II of the English Tripos. Part II is taken in the third and final year of the degree; an exciting, intense year of study, it includes the study of Practical Criticism and Tragedy, as well as more academic freedom, assessed through dissertations and exams. The prize, which is worth £350, was bequeathed to Cambridge by the late Mrs Frances Ethel Beddington.

In her three years at Lucy, Hollie has been key to the College community. Since starting in 2016, she’s been Editor of the Cavendish Chronicle, the student-run College magazine. From there, she launched the Cavendish Chronicle Creative Prize, which celebrates poetry, short fiction and visual art by the Lucy community. Hollie’s also supported the admissions teams, both in College and in Cambridge as a whole. She was part of the highly successful telephone campaign at Lucy, which raised funds for student support. Having left with a Bachelor’s degree and a highly commendable prize, Hollie plans to start her Master’s soon.

Hollie said:

"I am astonished and overjoyed to be awarded the Mrs Claude Beddington Prize, and so grateful to everyone at Lucy Cavendish for their support over the course of my degree. The English Faculty is an exciting and dynamic place to study, thanks in part to the groundbreaking work being done by students at Lucy and elsewhere to decolonise and diversify the curriculum. I hope to have the opportunity to work with these amazing people again in the future!"

College President Professor Dame Madeleine Atkins said:
