Alumna Dr Gita Khalili Moghaddam reached the finals of the Techpreneurs Awards for Women 2019.

Alumna, Dr Gita Khalili Moghaddam (Biotechnology, 2012) reached the finals of the Techpreneurs Awards for Women 2019 and pitched her idea in the House of Lords on 7 February.

The Techpreneurs Awards for Women recognise the achievements of female entrepreneurs in the technology sector and aim to inspire and encourage the next generation of game-changing female entrepreneurs. Women techpreneurs applied either for the Conceptual Award if they have founded an enterprise which has not yet started actively trading, or the Veteran Award if they have founded a business which has a turnover of less than £10m. The competition was fierce with over 30 top-class applications, from which the judges selected a shortlist of 19, which was then narrowed down to six finalists, including Gita, who did their live pitch in the House of Lords.

Gita completed her PhD at Lucy Cavendish College. She is now leading a start-up enterprise called TumourVue Ltd, a disruptive medical imaging device for cancer surgery to facilitate operations and provide precise, objective tumour margin detection intraoperatively. Her innovation received first prize and funding last year from Medtech Accelerator, a medical technology financial scheme that supports NHS innovators through the early stages of product development.

Gita said:

"It was a privilege to attend the Techpreneurs Awards 2019 in the House of Lords, pitch our startup, TumourVue, and meet outstanding women engaged in technology entrepreneurship. My entrepreneurship journey began as a Lucian. I am confident the enriched culture of the Lucy Cavendish College keeps paving the way for its passionate members to flourish their dreams through transforming the collective values into a unique social and commercial impact."

College President, Professor Dame Madeleine Atkins said:

“Many congratulations to Gita for this impressive achievement and we look forward to seeing how her enterprise develops in the future. She is a great example of Lucy Cavendish alumnae, who make a positive impact in science and technology.”
