The College’s interactive open day welcomed students as well as parents, supporters and guardians
On 17 February, the Admissions and Outreach teams at Lucy Cavendish College successfully ran their first ever college specific virtual open day. As it was held completely online the team were able to promote the event to a much wider audience because attendees didn’t have to worry about travelling and the cost and logistics of attending in person. It also meant that it was a carbon-friendly day – a great blueprint for future events. The open day was packed full of helpful and supportive sessions for prospective applicants and received high praise from the attendees.
Online sessions included a welcome to the College community and an introduction to life at the University of Cambridge. Dr Mark King, Admissions Director gave a talk on the College and the admissions process and Caitlin Law, Outreach Officer, ran a session on making a competitive application to Cambridge. Students also got to meet key teaching staff at the College including Directors of Studies as well as our current first year Law student Sophia Nie who did a brilliant job of answering students’ questions in the final Q+A session. Attendees also had access to a virtual tour and pre-recorded student experiences, in which existing students describe their courses, their day in College and life in Cambridge, sports sessions, fitness classes and societies. They also describe the supportive, friendly and relaxed Lucy community and share their own ideas about how to make an application.

Attendees commented:
“It made Cambridge seem like a more welcoming environment than I first thought it was. The staff running the meetings were extremely positive and made Cambridge appear much more attainable, as long you work hard enough.”
“The information provided on the College ethos and how it accommodates and helps students really make it appealing as a college and enables it to stand out from other colleges at Cambridge.”
“I really like the look of the new accommodation being built and the support offered.”
“It sounds like a friendly place which really cares about the individual experience and I feel I would be well supported and would learn well.”

The Admissions team also ran the first in a series of new Offer Holder Day Sessions on 18 February. The five virtual sessions cover a range of themes from the practical to the academic. The team collaborated with key people in College to ensure the sessions will help offer holders feel prepared to join us in October. The first session was attended by an incredible 95% of Offer Holders - the highest attendance rate of any offer holder event.
About Lucy Cavendish College
Having previously been a College for mature-age (21+) women, the College is now accepting applications from all suitably qualified students, regardless of age or gender. Most excitingly, it has chosen to take a unique stance on widening participation: it aims to become the first Cambridge College to admit a majority of its students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds and its long-term goal is to build a student population that is representative of wider UK society.
