Our combined football team, Lucy-Christs'-Churchill, have now won three years in a row.
Our combined football team, Lucy-Christs'-Churchill, won the CUAFL Plate Finals on 27 April. On the victorious team, three players represented Lucy Cavendish: Josefina Weinerova, Lu Liu, and Connie Buettner (also on the Blues team).
The CUAFL (Cambridge University Association Football League) is the primary league for college football. It involves about 900 players, with 58 teams competing across six divisions and four cup competitions: the highest participation of any sport at the University. Competition can be fierce, and the standard high – equally, the league offers everyone the chance to enjoy football, at every level.
In tough, windy conditions, the team’s victory was decisive: the final score was 4-0, against the John’s-King’s team, after a 2-0 lead at half time. The team has now won the competition for three years in a row. After coming top of the second league last year, it has risen up to the first, and continues to improve.
Connie said:
“We're really pleased to have retained the plate this year! We knew we had the quality in the team but we did have some very close games on our way to the final. The semi-final against Trinity was particularly challenging as we went down 1-0 very early on, before managing to equalise and finally win in extra time. Overall it has been a good season for the Lucy-Christs'-Churchill football team, as we've experienced more competitive games in Division 1 and have won some silverware. I've also found it to be a very friendly and welcoming environment, and a great way to get to know people from Lucy and the other colleges.”
College President Professor Dame Madeleine Atkins said:
“Congratulations to the Lucy-Christs'-Churchill team for this victory! Taking part in sport is an excellent way to promote wellbeing, and balance the intense academic environment here; it’s exciting to see our students represent Lucy Cavendish at every level, and make us proud.”
