On the 3rd of February, our undergraduate law students took part in a representation of a real-life court scenario.

College students argued a fictional tort case concerning the causation of COVID-19 on an appeal to the Supreme Court. The judges at the moot were Jane McNeill KC, an honorary fellow of the College and Charlotte Payne, an alumna of the College.

Seven teams of two students each took part in the competition. With just ten minutes for each participant to present their argument based on two key issues, it offered the students a real-life scenario of what it is like to represent a client in Court.

Dr Poorna Mysoor, Director of Studies said:

“Seeing students engage with the facts, the law, and the process of arguing the case before an appellate court was a fulfilling experience for me, especially since I supervise the law of Torts for them. The students showed maturity and thoughtfulness in their arguments. They made me proud!”

Dr Antoinette Nestor, Director of Studies said:

“It is amazing to see the development of arguments and the array of knowledge the students already have about the law. Moot Courts should and are an integral part of learning legal concepts and how they apply to real-life scenarios.”

The judges were equally impressed with the quality of mooting. The judges not only provided a helpful feedback session at the end, they also gave a judgement of the Court!

Students who pass the seven 'foundation' subjects may proceed directly to vocational training courses leading to the final professional examinations for barristers and solicitors. The two-year affiliate version of the course is recognised as a Senior Status Law Degree. Our Lawyers make up a large, diverse and supportive subject community in college. There is a flourishing Law Society.
