Lucy Cavendish College raises over £1,000 for breast cancer charities

MPhil student Holly Elgood-Curtis arranged a talk by a Fellow-Commoner, Professor Lynne Berry OBE, before a recent Formal Hall as part of Cambridge Pink Week. Professor Berry is the Chair of Breast Cancer Now, one of the seven charities supported by Cambridge Pink Week.

Guests were invited to wear pink and donate money by giving voluntary donations at the dinner and talk.  Further money was raised at the follow-on bop though entry fees, cloakroom and doughnut sales, arranged by Holly and the Lucy Cavendish Students’ Union Entertainments Team.  This was one of dozens of events across the City, from the headline Pink Week Ball to art exhibitions and supper clubs.

Cambridge Pink Week was started in 2011 by Clare College alumnae Nina Rauch, following her mother’s death from breast cancer.  It has become a pivotal event in the calendar for breast cancer awareness, raising more than £35,000 in 2018, and has since been emulated by Oxford, Durham, Bristol, Sussex, King’s College London and the Cass Business School.

Holly said:

“I am thrilled that we raised an amazing £1083.88 throughout the evening!  I'm so grateful to, and proud of, the whole Lucy community for supporting such a worthy cause – not least to Lynne Berry for her insightful and emotive talk.  Raising over a thousand pounds in one night is incredible, and I hope it will help make a huge difference to the work of these amazing charities.”

College President, Dame Professor Madeleine Atkins, said:

“Many congratulations and thanks to Holly, Lynne, the Students' Union and everyone who gave their time, energy and – most importantly – money for this most worthy of causes.  Holly is a great example of Lucy Cavendish students, who make a positive impact on society.”
