This pioneering programme prepares students for their Cambridge journey and fosters a sense of belonging through a mix of academic, social, and wellbeing activities.
Last week, we hosted another successful Bridging, a key milestone for our new students embarking on their University of Cambridge journey. This thoughtfully designed programme helps students transition smoothly into university life, combining academic preparation with social integration and wellbeing support.
The Registration & Marketplace event marked the start of the week, providing a central hub for students to pick up their keys and University cards. Representatives from different College departments were on hand to answer any questions the students may have.
This was also the first chance for new students to connect with their peers and experience the welcoming atmosphere that Lucy Cavendish is renowned for.
One student remarked, “People at college are all friendly and nice. The student helpers were amazing!”
Moving into the second day, the emphasis shifted to embracing college life and preparing for the academic challenges ahead. A series of talks and study skills sessions equipped students with the tools needed to thrive in their studies. A library induction helped students navigate Cambridge’s extensive academic resources. The evening was dedicated to supper and student-led activities, fostering new friendships in a relaxed environment.
A Humanities student commented, “The essay writing session was really useful and interesting.”
Tuesday brought a different focus: student wellbeing and community. Morning sessions highlighted the College's welfare and support services, ensuring students knew where to seek help when facing challenges. In the afternoon, guided walks around university departments allowed students to explore Cambridge and familiarise themselves with its layout.
“Bridging week was fun and was good to settle into the nice environment of college” shared a student.
Wednesday introduced Cambridge’s unique learning environment and featured the first Matriculation Ceremony. Morning sessions helped students understand Cambridge’s academic culture, stressing both excellence and collaboration. Later, subject groups met to discuss their areas of study, laying the groundwork for collaborative learning and peer support. The evening culminated in a momentous occasion for Humanities students as they wore their gowns for the Matriculation Ceremony and Dinner, while Science and Maths students enjoyed bonding activities, with their Matriculation ceremonies planned for the following evenings.
Bridging Week is a carefully crafted journey that transforms newcomers into confident members of the community. The programme's blend of academic, social, and wellbeing-focused events ensures that each student is not only prepared for their studies but also feels a sense of belonging within the College and Cambridge.
We would like to thank the Student Office team lead by Programme Administrator (Academic), Sarah Darke, for organising another succesful event.
Huge thank you also goes to our amazing Student Helpers and all who helped make the week special for our students.
