The programme provided an Access to Higher Education course in Humanities or Social Sciences with the opportunity to attend Masterclasses
HE21+ is a brand new programme designed to provide mature students with an insight into the skills needed to succeed as a university student, as well as a chance to delve into courses on offer at university. As part of the programme, students work their way through a series of subject-specific online resources and can even receive academic mentoring from Lucy Cavendish students when tackling assignments. Programmes like this for mature students at further education colleges are currently few and far between, so Lucy Cavendish were excited to launch such a valuable initiative and meet the students themselves at the Masterclass day on 28th November.
Working in partnership with the other mature colleges, Lucy Cavendish welcomed over 30 students studying Access to Higher Education in Humanities and Social Sciences courses from across the country for a packed day of talks, lectures and sample supervisions. Students were able to explore fascinating subjects they may not have encountered before, such as Law and Archaeology, and were able to experience first-hand the discussion-based teaching style here at Cambridge. The day was also a great opportunity to get a real feel for life as a university student, thanks to our student helpers leading excellent tours around the college and joining attendees for lunch. As always, the guinea pigs were a hit!
Feedback from the pilot event was very positive, with students praising the quality of the academic sessions and the opportunity to talk to current students. We look forward to seeing the programme continue to flourish.
